An open artistic project

From Anthropocene to aerocene

Aerocene is an artistic project, an invitation to shape a period of time, a new epoch.

Aerocene manifests as a series of air-fuelled sculptures that will achieve the longest, emission-free journey around the world: becoming buoyant only by the heat of the Sun and infrared radiation from the surface of Earth. The sculpture floats without burning fossil fuels, without using solar panels and batteries; and without helium, hydrogen and other rare gases.  Aerocene holds a message of simplicity, creativity and cooperation for a world of tumultuous geopolitical relations, reminding us of our symbiotic relationship with the Earth and all its species.

Win A Solar Flight!

Collect your fossil-fuel-free ‘miles and more.’ Become part of the #flyforchange campaign and help build a new fleet of air-fuelled sculptures.  Share one with your friends, and even start your own Pilot License course!

The Aerocene D-O AEC air-fuelled sculpture already successfully carried passengers without any use of propane for nearly three hours. This recent experiment at the White Sands National Monument in New Mexico, USA witnessed artist Tomás Saraceno achieving the World Record for the first, and the longest, purely solar-powered, certified, lighter-than-air tethered flight.

The Aerocene action and project enlivens the discussion on 2-degree climate thresholds; it materialises debates on climatic shifts in stunning social and collaborative practices.

Aerocene Open Call - Exhibition Road, London

Invitation to join an open collaborative hack to imagine future Aerocene journeys. Aerocene comes to the Exhibition Road for an interdisciplinary artistic project co-produced by the members of the Exhibition Road Cultural Group, gathering together 16 prestigious cultural and scientific institutions in London, among them Imperial College, Natural History Museum, Science Museum and Serpentine Galleries.

August 27 launch: Schönfelde, Germany

Join us for the next leg of the Aerocene "Around the World" carbon-free solar journey! Saturday, 27 August at 7:00 a.m., we will be launching Aerocene solar balloon sculptures with atmospheric recording sensor payloads in Schönfelde, Germany (2 hours from Berlin by train). In addition to the launch, we invite you to a participate in two challenges and win a prize.

The Aerocene Explorer kit

The Aerocene Explorer is a tethered-flight starter kit currently in deveolpment (join us to build it), which will enable anyone to personally launch their own Aerocene solar sculpture and explore the skies.  A tactile and engaging way to experience the Aerocene, each Explorer kit comes with a small camera and sensoring devices to record air temperature, humidity, altitude, and air pressure. The Explorer allows participants to take aerial photographs and videos and to collect meteorological data using non-intrusive, emissions-free scientific exploration tools. Additionally participants can ‘hack’ the technical devices to create their own light-weight sensors and lift them up. All the kit's contents are secured in a backpack to ensure portability and comfort when out in the field exploring.

Explore the interconnected world!

Make a suggestion of a payload for our next flight - up to 1.88kg.

The air is a super highway an ocean of unexplored life, an estimated 25.000.000 organisms per square mile, traversing the expanse above our heads. Like the ballooning spider, we can reach new heights, piloting our gossamer to new worlds of cooperative living.

Make a suggestion of a payload or write a message that will be lifted up on our next flight.
Propose the idea in the form below and get your imagination lifted by the sun.

The Aerocene Explorer kit contains a sensory devices pack with a photo/video camera and sensors to record air temperature, altitude, humidity, and air pressure. The sensory devices pack was developed for the Aerocene project in collaboration with Sven Steudte.

Aerocene is a community supported by the Aerocene Foundation which develops and applies open-source tools to environmental exploration and investigation. By democratizing inexpensive and accessible do-It-together techniques, Aerocene is creating a collaborative network of practitioners who actively re-imagine the human relationship with the environment.

A Step Around the World

The project Aerocene is a collective endeavour that is being currently developed by a team, reunited under a non-profit organisation. Your donation makes further flights and artistic experiments possible and helps to keep the message in the air. The sculpture sets the road for the most sustainable and energy efficient vehicle humans have ever created.

Inflated by air,

Lifted by sunlight,

Carried by the wind.

Join the action!

Aerocene is a fully open project that relies on worldwide social action and interaction and aims to mobilise groups of individuals to find multiple concrete solutions for our common environment, now and here on Earth. Aerocene is related to Cloud Cities, a project centered around the idea of cities in the sky. A speculative project by Tomás Saraceno.

Guess The Journey

Guess the trajectory and landing of where the sculpture will go! The next launch will take place in Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia, and you can win an aerosolar sculpture by sending the coordinates of your prediction location.

Win a flight

Get lifted by the sun

So far only a few people have flown with aerosolar vehicles. Get lifted by the sun and feel the flow of the winds in one of the locations where we fly.

Propose a payload

Make a suggestion of a payload, what we should bring on our next flight, that weighs up to 5g. An advisory committee will select the best ideas and we will bring them with us!
