Presenting the

AEROCENE EXPLORER: BETA VERSION

An open-source, Do-It-Together flying sculpture for solar-powered atmospheric exploration

***Open Call: be in the first Aerocene Explorer MOVIE - Share a 1-minute video of your Aerocene experience

(scroll down for details)***

Scheduled for release early next year, the Aerocene Explorer is currently being tested and developed in beta version by a passionate global community of artists, geographers, philosophers, thinkers, speculative scientists, explorers, balloonists, and technologists, and other enthusiasts.

The Aerocene Explorer is a tethered-flight starter kit, which enables anyone to personally launch their own Aerocene solar sculpture and start exploring the skies. A tactile and engaging way to experience the Aerocene, the Explorer allows participants to take aerial photographs and videos and to collect atmospheric data using non-intrusive, emissions-free scientific exploration tools that measure air quality, temperature, humidity, and pressure.

Additionally participants can ‘hack’ the devices pack, create their own lightweight sensors, and lift them up. Data collected with the Aerocene Explorer can be uploaded and shared with Aerocene’s open-source online community, via an interactive website that will encourage participants all over the world to share their experiments, photos and videos, comments, and innovations.

The Aerocene Explorer is revolutionising a common understanding of what it takes to become aerosolar and offering a new knowledge of what sustainable energy can achieve. Using open-source, Do-It-Together (DIT) techniques, Aerocene seeks to change how people see the world in environmental, social, and political terms.

The Aerocene Explorer is designed to engage participants in thinking-through-making activity, stimulate imagination and creativity, and impart information about solar balloon flight, thermodynamic physics, meteorological science, and art practices in a multidisciplinary way.

THE AEROCENE MOVIE

The Aerocene Exploer movie is a collective endeavor of experiences by many people all around the world that come together with 1-minute videos to challenge the Anthropocene and start building a new epoch, the Aerocene.

Naomi Klein claims that “we have been told it is impossible to get off fossil fuels when in fact we know exactly how to do it.” Join us, and imagine possible futures - without fossil fuels, helium, rare gases, batteries. Using only the Sun and wind.

We invite you to test our Aerocene Explorer beta version and take part in our Aerocene movie! You will have the chance to investigate a different model for living and floating in this century. We will send you an Aerocene Explorer kit for two months. Feel free to customise and use it in manifold ways, with your community, neighbours, and friends! When you send us back the kit, we ask you one more thing in return: to share with us your experience in a 1-minute video.

You can film any way you like! Use your smartphone, or use the camera onboard the Explorer to shoot a video in the sky. There is no "right way" to film your experience. But you can start thinking about these questions: What are your first impressions of the Explorer? How could you imagine people would use it in the future? What issue in your community would you most like to shed some light on? Introduce us to yourself, your friends, your community. It is your Explorer.

AEROCENE MANIFEST

From Anthropocene to aerocene

Aerocene

Aerocene is an artistic project, an invitation to shape a period of time, a new epoch.

Aerocene manifests as a series of air-fuelled sculptures that will achieve the longest, emission-free journey around the world: becoming buoyant only by the heat of the Sun and infrared radiation from the surface of Earth. The sculpture floats without burning fossil fuels, without using solar panels and batteries; and without helium, hydrogen and other rare gases.  Aerocene holds a message of simplicity, creativity and cooperation for a world of tumultuous geopolitical relations, reminding us of our symbiotic relationship with the Earth and all its species.

Win A Solar Flight!

#LIFTEDBYTHESUN   #AEROCENE    #FLYSHARING

Collect your fossil-fuel-free ‘miles and more.’ Become part of the #flyforchange campaign and help build a new fleet of air-fuelled sculptures.  Share one with your friends, and even start your own Pilot License course!

The Aerocene D-O AEC air-fuelled sculpture already successfully carried passengers without any use of propane for nearly three hours. This recent experiment at the White Sands National Monument in New Mexico, USA witnessed artist Tomás Saraceno achieving the World Record for the first, and the longest, purely solar-powered, certified, lighter-than-air tethered flight.

The Aerocene action and project enlivens the discussion on 2-degree climate thresholds; it materialises debates on climatic shifts in stunning social and collaborative practices.

Open Call: AEROCENE HACK 2

November 26-27, 2016 | Exhibition Road, London

Aerocene together with Exhibition Road institutions announce an open call for a second collaborative hack to imagine and prototype the future of the Aerocene Explorer. We are looking for developers, designers, artists, data scientists, and creative technologists. Aerocene is an open-source project for artistic and scientific exploration which centers around the Aerocene Explorer, an evolving air-fuelled sculpture for personal exploration of the air.

Aerocene at Exhibition Road, London

Through October to December 2016, Aerocene comes to Exhibition Road for an interdisciplinary artistic project co-produced by the members of the Exhibition Road Cultural Group, gathering together 17 prestigious cultural and scientific institutions in London, among them Imperial College London, the Natural History Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum and Serpentine Galleries. For this occasion, Aerocene creates a collaborative research platform between Exhibition Road members and wider communities.

AEROCENE HACK

PREDICT  THE JOURNEY!

Join the development of free fly predictor tracking and predicting the paths. Exercise your thermodynamic imagination.
Forecast the trajectory of the free-flight. – in the free highways of the jet streams.

Aerocene is a traveling sculpture that crosses frontiers between art and science: becoming a visionary open participatory platform of knowledge production and distribution. Aerocene Campus: join us in hacking the Anthropocene to create the Aerocene.  Aerocene Flight Predictor: Help to develop Aerocene flight predictor further together with  collaborators including MIT Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Science Department (EAPS). Create a powerful graphical interface with intuitive user interaction that visualises forecast data and predicted flight paths. Imagine and prototype innovative user scenarios for Aerocene flight, potentially including mashups with other data sources. --Read more

A Step Around the World

The project Aerocene is a collective endeavour that is being currently developed by a team, reunited under a non-profit organisation. Your donation makes further flights and artistic experiments possible and helps to keep the message in the air. The sculpture sets the road for the most sustainable and energy efficient vehicle humans have ever created.

Inflated by air,

Lifted by sunlight,

Carried by the wind.

Images from Aerocene flights around the world, from Germany to Poland - Aerocene  traveled 500 km with the energy of sun heat Additional images from White Sands Dunes, New Mexico, US and Solomon Islands (TBA21 expedition). The project floats in the air without burning of fossil fuels, without the use of solar panels or batteries, and without using helium, hydrogen or other rare gases.

Join the action!

Aerocene is a fully open project that relies on worldwide social action and interaction and aims to mobilise groups of individuals to find multiple concrete solutions for our common environment, now and here on Earth. Aerocene is related to Cloud Cities, a project centered around the idea of cities in the sky. A speculative project by Tomás Saraceno.

Guess The Journey

Guess the trajectory and landing of where the sculpture will go! The next launch will take place in Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia, and you can win an aerosolar sculpture by sending the coordinates of your prediction location.

Win a flight

Get lifted by the sun

So far only a few people have flown with aerosolar vehicles. Get lifted by the sun and feel the flow of the winds in one of the locations where we fly.

Propose a payload

Make a suggestion of a payload, what we should bring on our next flight, that weighs up to 5g. An advisory committee will select the best ideas and we will bring them with us!
